.19 Calhoon Hornet Handloads

.19 Calhoon Hornet Handloads
Warning! Notes: These are all maximum loads, and shooters should start with loads about 10 percent below these and work up. These loads were developed with Remington brass and CCI 400 primers. Some of these loads were hot in Winchester brass. Accurate Arms 1680 and Vihtavuori N120 were the two most consistent and accurate powders tested. Loads shown here are safe only in the guns for which they were developed.

.19 Calhoon Hornet Handloads: Maximizing a Wildcat’s Potential

The .19 Calhoon Hornet is a refined variant of the classic .22 Hornet, designed by James Calhoon to provide a highly efficient and accurate cartridge for small-game and varmint shooting. By necking down the .22 Hornet case to accept a .198-inch bullet, Calhoon achieved a unique balance of high velocity, flat trajectory, and mild recoil, making it a favorite among enthusiasts who value precision in the field. Handloading this cartridge allows shooters to extract its full potential, tailoring loads to their specific rifles and needs.

At its core, the .19 Calhoon Hornet excels because of its thoughtful design. The smaller bore diameter compared to the parent case reduces drag and improves ballistic efficiency, while maintaining enough bullet mass for excellent energy retention on target. This balance makes it an ideal choice for varmint hunters targeting prairie dogs, ground squirrels, and other small pests where shot placement and trajectory are critical. As with most wildcat cartridges, the .19 Calhoon Hornet’s performance is unlocked through careful and deliberate handloading practices.

Handloaders working with this cartridge typically start with .22 Hornet brass, which is resized and necked down to accommodate the smaller bullet diameter. While this requires specialized dies and some experience in case preparation, the process is straightforward for those familiar with wildcat reloading. The availability of high-quality .19 caliber bullets from Calhoon himself has made it possible for handloaders to experiment with different projectile weights and profiles, optimizing their loads for speed, accuracy, or terminal performance depending on their intended use.

Powder selection plays a critical role in achieving the .19 Calhoon Hornet’s signature performance. Faster-burning powders are often chosen to maximize efficiency in the small case volume, ensuring consistent ignition and uniform velocities. Many handloaders report velocities exceeding 3,700 feet per second with light bullets, making the cartridge a formidable option for precise long-range varmint shooting. Coupled with its low recoil, these characteristics allow shooters to stay on target for quick follow-up shots and extended shooting sessions without fatigue.

One of the most appealing aspects of loading for the .19 Calhoon Hornet is the ability to fine-tune every aspect of performance. From bullet seating depth to powder charges, each variable can be adjusted to meet a specific rifle’s preferences. This level of customization transforms the .19 Calhoon Hornet from a niche cartridge into a precision instrument, delivering remarkable accuracy when paired with quality rifles like the popular CZ 527 conversions offered by Calhoon.

For dedicated handloaders, the .19 Calhoon Hornet is more than just a wildcat—it is a rewarding project. Its blend of speed, accuracy, and efficiency offers performance well beyond its modest case size, making it a standout choice for those who take the time to craft their own ammunition. Though it may not have the widespread availability of factory-loaded cartridges, its reputation for precision and practicality continues to earn it a place in the arsenals of discerning varmint shooters.
