Cartridge History

.218 Bee (A-Square Data)

The .218 Bee is a small, rimmed, bottlenecked rifle cartridge developed in the 1930s by Winchester for use in their lever-action rifles, such as the Model 65. While initially created for a platform not known for pinpoint precision, the cartridge quickly earned a reputation for mild recoil and flat trajectories, making it a favorite among varmint and small-game hunters of the time.

A-Square’s contribution to this cartridge lies in their detailed ballistic testing and published load data, offering shooters a refined and reliable set of recipes for getting the most out of this classic round. Their data typically focuses on bullets in the 35 to 50 grain range, paired with fast-burning powders ideal for the Bee’s compact case. These loads produce high velocities while maintaining manageable pressures, ideal for rifles that may be older or more sensitive to overpressure issues.

Though eclipsed in popularity by more modern small-caliber cartridges, the .218 Bee remains relevant for shooters seeking a balance of nostalgia, efficiency, and performance. In bolt-action rifles or single-shot platforms, its accuracy potential is surprisingly strong — particularly when paired with A-Square’s carefully tuned load combinations.

Whether used for coyotes, prairie dogs, or simply for the joy of working with a classic cartridge, the .218 Bee continues to hum in the hands of enthusiasts — and A-Square’s documentation ensures that it does so safely and effectively.
