Cartridge History
.218 Bee Data The .218 Bee, introduced by Winchester in 1937, has long been a favorite among varmint hunters who appreciate its blend of speed and light recoil. The data published in Handloader Issue #30 – March, 1971 provides a classic snapshot of what the cartridge was capable of under the reliable standards of that era. Although component quality, barrel condition, and powder availability have changed since then, many of the load measurements and safety considerations remain valid as starting points for modern reloaders. As per the 1971 testing, several bullet weights were evaluated, generally ranging from around 35 to 50 grains. The lighter bullets yielded higher velocities, and the data showed that with proper barrels and clean ammunition, the .218 Bee could produce excellent group sizes at 100 yards. Moderate powders of that time—often slower-burning compared to today’s high-performance offerings—were used to balance performance with pressure to preserve barrel life. One of the notable features of the Handloader #30 data is the emphasis on case preparation, accurate measurement of overall length, and consistent primer seating. Variations in seating depth or inconsistent brass prep were shown to significantly affect accuracy and group size. Also, velocities recorded in the old tests are somewhat lower than what modern powders can produce, but they are more forgiving, especially in vintage rifles or lever-action rifles for which the Bee was originally designed. The safety margins in the 1971 data are also noteworthy. The article frequently advises using loads that leave pressure signs visible only under rigorous testing, and always recommends working up loads slowly. This conservative approach has helped many shooters extend barrel life and avoid dangerous pressure build-ups. Today, many reloaders reference this data when choosing “moderate” rather than “maximum” loads—especially with older firearms or those with unknown chamber specifications. Overall, the Handloader #30 data remains a valuable resource. It reminds handloaders that optimal performance isn’t just about pushing the limits but about knowing your rifle, components, and how small tweaks in seating depth or powder type can influence results. These proven baselines continue to guide shooters who want reliable, accurate .218 Bee performance without excessive wear or risk. Source: Handloader Issue #30 |
