Warning! A custom Remington 700 with a 26-inch barrel, built by Dale Hegstrom, of Little Crow Gun Works, equipped with a Trijicon 4.5-30x 50mm scope was used to test all loads. Peterson Cartridge cases and Federal 210M primers were used throughout. All loads were assembled using Redding dies in a Redding T-7 Reloading Press. All powder was weighed and dispensed on an RCBS MatchMaster and charge weights were accurate to .04 grains. Velocities are the average of five rounds chronographed at 10 feet using an Oehler Model 35P. The temperature was 57 degrees Fahrenheit, humidity was 27 percent, altitude was 5,200 feet, pressure was 25.16 in HG. The listed velocities were an average of five shots. This is a wildcat cartridge with no SAAMI pressure guidelines, as a result all of the loads listed were below 62,500 PSI. No minimum or maximum charge weights were given. .22 Creedmoor

The .22 Creedmoor is a high-velocity, flat-shooting cartridge that has gained favor among long-range varmint hunters and competitive shooters looking for superior ballistics in the .22 caliber class. Born from necking down the 6.5 Creedmoor case to accept .224-inch bullets, the .22 Creedmoor offers increased velocity, better wind resistance, and higher ballistic coefficients than traditional .22 centerfires like the .223 Remington or .22-250. It delivers performance that pushes the edge of .22 caliber capabilities, often rivaling 6mm-class cartridges in trajectory and energy.

In Handloader Issue #330 – February, 2021, the cartridge is explored with extensive test data, covering optimal powders, bullet weights, and barrel considerations. With its large case capacity and relatively small bore diameter, the .22 Creedmoor performs best with slower-burning rifle powders such as H4350, Reloder 16, and IMR 4451. Handloaders should be cautious with pressure signs, especially in hot weather or with light bullets. Primers such as CCI BR-2 or Federal 210M are typically recommended for consistent ignition and uniform velocity.

The .22 Creedmoor thrives with heavy-for-caliber bullets in the 75- to 95-grain range, such as the Berger 80.5-grain Fullbore Target or the Hornady 88-grain ELD Match. These high-BC projectiles make the most of the cartridge’s velocity potential, allowing shooters to engage targets well beyond 1,000 yards with minimal wind drift and drop. However, fast twist barrels (1:7" or faster) are essential to stabilize these long bullets. The cartridge’s popularity has spurred custom barrel makers and bolt-gun builders to offer dedicated setups for precision shooters seeking an edge in PRS-style matches and long-range hunting applications.

Load development for the .22 Creedmoor often emphasizes low standard deviation (SD) and consistent bullet seating. While full-length resizing is common practice to ensure reliable chambering in precision rifles, neck sizing may be used by shooters with single-shot setups. Case life tends to be good when loads are kept within moderate pressures, but the combination of large powder volume and small bore can accelerate throat erosion, so proper barrel maintenance and cooldown intervals are advised.

The cartridge has seen limited adoption in factory offerings, but its growing popularity in the custom and reloading world reflects its unique balance of flat trajectory, high speed, and long-range precision. Its niche is especially relevant for those wanting more energy and reach than a .223 or .22-250, without stepping into the recoil of a 6.5mm or 7mm cartridge. From coyotes to steel plates, the .22 Creedmoor stands out as a potent tool when built and loaded with care.
