A short-action Model 700 Remington barreled to 25 Souper by Charlie Sisk, with a 24-inch Lilja barrel (1:10 twist) and a 3-9x 36mm Swarovski scope was set at 6x was used to test all loads. Remington 243 Winchester cases were necked up in a Redding full-length sizing die and CCI 200 Large Rifle primers seated with an RCBS hand tool. Powder charges were hand-measured on an Ohaus scale to deliver bullet velocities reasonable for the cartridge. These were measured at 14 feet with an Oehler 35 chronograph. Accuracy was established by a single, three-shot group.

.25 Souper

The .25 Souper is one of the most practical and successful wildcat cartridges ever developed from the .308 Winchester case. Created by necking the .308 Winchester down to accept .257-inch bullets, the cartridge was designed to provide near-.25-06 Remington performance in a shorter action while maintaining excellent efficiency and accuracy. Although it never achieved commercial factory status, the .25 Souper earned a loyal following among handloaders, competitive shooters, and hunters who appreciated its balance of velocity, manageable recoil, and efficient case design.

The cartridge emerged during a period when wildcatters were actively experimenting with the .308 Winchester case. Introduced in the 1950s, the .308 quickly became the parent case for numerous successful designs due to its strength, efficiency, and widespread availability. By reducing the neck diameter to .25 caliber, experimenters created a cartridge capable of driving lightweight and medium-weight bullets at impressive velocities while fitting into compact short-action rifles. The resulting design provided excellent performance for varmints, predators, deer-sized game, and long-range target shooting.

One of the primary advantages of the .25 Souper is its efficiency. Compared to larger cartridges such as the .25-06 Remington, the Souper requires less powder to achieve similar performance levels, particularly with bullets ranging from 75 to 120 grains. This efficiency often results in reduced muzzle blast, lower recoil, and potentially longer barrel life. Hunters have long appreciated the cartridge's flat trajectory and excellent terminal performance on deer and antelope-sized game, while varmint shooters benefit from its ability to launch lighter bullets at high velocities.

Accuracy has always been one of the cartridge's strongest attributes. Built upon the inherently accurate .308 Winchester case, the .25 Souper is capable of exceptional precision when paired with quality components and careful handloading practices. The cartridge performs well with a wide variety of powders and bullet weights, allowing handloaders to tailor ammunition for specific applications. Whether loaded with lightweight varmint bullets or heavier hunting projectiles, the cartridge delivers consistent results across a broad range of shooting disciplines.

The introduction of factory cartridges such as the .243 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, and .25 WSSM limited the commercial appeal of the .25 Souper, but it never disappeared from the shooting community. Instead, it remained a respected wildcat among enthusiasts who valued its unique combination of performance and efficiency. Brass can be easily formed from .308 Winchester cases, making it relatively straightforward for experienced reloaders to keep rifles chambered for the cartridge in operation.

Today, the .25 Souper stands as a testament to the ingenuity of American wildcat cartridge development. It successfully demonstrated that outstanding ballistic performance could be achieved without excessive case capacity or long-action rifle platforms. While it remains a specialty cartridge, the .25 Souper continues to attract shooters who appreciate efficient design, excellent accuracy, and the satisfaction that comes from loading and shooting a classic wildcat cartridge.
