.260 Remington (Pet Loads) (Handloader issue #358)

The .260 Remington was introduced commercially by Remington in 1997, but its origins trace back decades to the popular 6.5-08 wildcat. Formed by necking the .308 Winchester case down to accept .264-inch bullets, the cartridge combined the efficiency and compact dimensions of the .308 family with the outstanding ballistic characteristics of 6.5mm projectiles. Long before its factory introduction, competitive shooters and handloaders recognized the advantages of the 6.5-08 for its flat trajectory, modest recoil, and exceptional accuracy. Although newer cartridges such as the 6.5 Creedmoor have attracted significant attention in recent years, the .260 Remington remains highly respected by knowledgeable shooters who appreciate its efficiency, versatility, and proven track record. Its combination of manageable recoil, excellent accuracy, and effective terminal performance continues to make it an outstanding choice for hunting and precision shooting alike. Decades after its development as a wildcat, the .260 Remington remains one of the finest examples of the enduring versatility found within the .308 Winchester cartridge family.
