| Warning! Notes: Standard twist: 10". This cartridge is of the same design as the No. 1 Short .30 Magnum except its length has been increased enough to make it possible to rechamber standard .30-06 barrels without setting them back. Cartridge History
.30 Ackley Short Magnum No. 2 (P.O. Ackley Data) The .30 Ackley Short Magnum No. 2 was another experimental wildcat cartridge created by famed gunsmith and cartridge designer P.O. Ackley during his extensive work with high-performance sporting rounds. Developed as part of Ackley’s short magnum series, the No. 2 variant was designed to further explore the balance between compact cartridge dimensions and magnum-level ballistic performance. Ackley believed efficient case design could provide impressive velocity without relying entirely on excessive case length, leading him to experiment with shortened belted magnum cases featuring sharp shoulder angles and minimal body taper. Like many Ackley wildcats, the .30 Ackley Short Magnum No. 2 required custom chambering and carefully formed brass. Cases were generally produced from existing belted magnum parent cases through trimming, resizing, and fire-forming procedures. These modifications allowed handloaders to create a highly efficient powder chamber while maintaining reliable feeding and extraction characteristics. The cartridge remained strictly within the handloading and custom rifle community, as no major manufacturer ever standardized or commercially adopted the design. The No. 2 version differed slightly from the earlier No. 1 configuration, reflecting Ackley’s constant experimentation with shoulder placement, body dimensions, and powder capacity. This process of refining dimensions was common among wildcat cartridge designers during the mid-twentieth century, especially among those searching for the best combination of velocity, accuracy, and case efficiency. Ackley’s work often emphasized practical experimentation over rigid standardization, which is why many of his cartridges existed in multiple closely related forms. In practical use, the .30 Ackley Short Magnum No. 2 offered strong performance with common .30 caliber hunting bullets, producing velocities comparable to larger magnum cartridges while using a more compact case design. Although it never achieved mainstream popularity, the cartridge remains historically significant among wildcat enthusiasts and collectors. It also serves as an early example of the design concepts that would later influence commercially successful short magnum cartridges decades afterward. |
