Cartridge History

.30 BR Remington (Western Powders LT-30)

The .30 BR Remington is a highly specialized benchrest cartridge developed from the 6mm BR Remington case necked up to accept .30 caliber bullets. Though relatively compact in appearance, the cartridge earned an outstanding reputation for extreme accuracy in short-range benchrest competition, particularly in 100- and 200-yard events. Its efficient powder capacity, mild recoil, and inherently accurate case design made it a favorite among precision shooters looking for consistent performance and minimal shot-to-shot variation.

Unlike many larger .30 caliber cartridges intended for hunting or long-range power, the .30 BR was designed almost entirely around accuracy. Most loads use lightweight flat-base bullets in the 110- to 125-grain range, allowing shooters to maintain excellent velocity while keeping recoil low enough to spot impacts through the scope. The cartridge’s short powder column promotes efficient and consistent ignition, which contributes heavily to its legendary benchrest performance.

Western Powders LT-30 became a popular propellant choice for the .30 BR Remington because of its clean-burning characteristics and excellent consistency in precision applications. Designed with benchrest shooters in mind, LT-30 offers stable metering and predictable pressures, making it well suited for carefully tuned competition loads. Handloaders working with the .30 BR often focus on extremely fine adjustments in seating depth, neck tension, and powder charge weight, as the cartridge is capable of remarkable accuracy when paired with properly tuned components.

Although the .30 BR Remington never achieved mainstream commercial popularity outside the benchrest community, it remains one of the most respected short-range accuracy cartridges ever developed. Its continued success in competitive shooting circles demonstrates how efficient cartridge design and careful handloading can outperform far larger and more powerful cartridges when absolute precision is the primary goal.
