.30 Gibbs in a 26-inch Barrel
Warning! Notes: All loads listed are maximum except where noted. Starting loads should be reduced at least 4 grains. Rifle had a 26-inch barrel with one-in-10-inch twist; all loads used CCI 250 primers, WW cases. Average weight 190.8 grains primed. Velocities measured on Oehler 33 chronograph at 15 feet, converted to muzzle velocity.

Cartridge History

.30 Gibbs in a 26-inch Barrel

The .30 Gibbs was developed by Rocky Gibbs as a high-performance wildcat cartridge based on the .30-06 Springfield case. By reducing body taper and incorporating a sharper shoulder angle, Gibbs was able to increase powder capacity and improve overall efficiency while still using a standard-length rifle action. The cartridge quickly became respected among experienced handloaders and long-range hunters who wanted magnum-like performance without relying on belted magnum cases.

When chambered in a rifle equipped with a 26-inch barrel, the .30 Gibbs is capable of maximizing much of its velocity potential. The additional barrel length allows slower-burning powders more time to fully develop pressure and accelerate bullets, often resulting in noticeably higher velocities compared to shorter sporting barrels. This made the cartridge especially appealing for shooters interested in flatter trajectories and improved long-range hunting performance with common .30 caliber bullet weights.

Handloader Issue #143 examined the .30 Gibbs specifically in a 26-inch barrel configuration, highlighting the cartridge’s ability to approach magnum-level performance while maintaining the advantages of a non-belted case design. Like many improved wildcats, the .30 Gibbs generally requires fire-forming standard .30-06 brass to create its final case dimensions. Handloaders often favor slow-burning powders capable of taking full advantage of the increased case capacity and longer barrel length while maintaining safe operating pressures.

Although never commercially standardized, the .30 Gibbs earned a lasting reputation among wildcat enthusiasts for combining high velocity, efficient case design, and strong field performance. Even decades after its introduction, it remains one of the better-known American .30 caliber wildcats from the golden age of cartridge experimentation.
