.30 Gibbs

.30 Gibbs
Warning! Notes: All loads gave safe, trouble-free working pressures, but with the throat of test rifle quite badly worn, they are likely to prove excessive in new barrels. However, loads with similar pressures will give similar velocities. Starting loads should be at least five grains below those listed above. .30 Gibbs Model 70 Winchester; .30-06 rechambered 24-inch barrel; W-W case, 194 grains; CCI No. 200 primers

Cartridge History

.30 Gibbs

The .30 Gibbs is a classic American wildcat cartridge developed by Rocky Gibbs during the mid-twentieth century. Based on the .30-06 Springfield case, the cartridge was redesigned with significantly reduced body taper and a sharper shoulder angle in order to increase powder capacity and improve ballistic performance. Like many wildcats of its era, the .30 Gibbs reflected a growing interest among experimenters and custom rifle builders who wanted greater velocity and efficiency than standard factory cartridges could provide.

By “improving” the .30-06 case design, Rocky Gibbs was able to create a cartridge capable of pushing .30 caliber bullets at noticeably higher velocities while still using a standard-length rifle action. The sharper shoulder and straighter case walls allowed additional powder space and often improved case life during repeated reloadings. Shooters interested in long-range hunting and high-velocity performance were especially drawn to cartridges like the .30 Gibbs during a period when wildcatting was becoming increasingly popular among serious rifle enthusiasts.

Forming .30 Gibbs brass generally involves fire-forming standard .30-06 Springfield cases within a properly chambered rifle. During this process, the case expands to match the chamber dimensions, creating the characteristic sharp shoulder and reduced taper associated with the design. Because of the cartridge’s nonstandard dimensions, proper dies and careful handloading practices are required. Handloaders often favored slow-burning powders capable of maximizing velocity while maintaining safe pressure levels in the improved case.

Although the .30 Gibbs never became a commercial standardized cartridge, it earned a strong reputation among experienced reloaders and custom rifle shooters. Its combination of increased velocity, efficient case design, and compatibility with common .30 caliber bullets helped keep interest alive for decades. The cartridge also remains historically significant as one of the more recognizable “improved” .30 caliber wildcats created during the golden age of American cartridge experimentation.
