Cartridge History
.30 Herrett (Accurate Handgun Loads) The .30 Herrett is one of the most respected handgun hunting cartridges ever developed for the Thompson/Center Contender platform. Created by Steve Herrett and Bob Milek during the early 1970s, the cartridge was based on the .30-30 Winchester case shortened and reshaped for improved efficiency in short barrels. The design focused on maximizing usable velocity while reducing wasted powder and excessive muzzle blast commonly associated with rifle cartridges fired from handguns. By shortening the .30-30 case and optimizing powder capacity for handgun-length barrels, the .30 Herrett achieved impressive ballistic performance while maintaining excellent accuracy. The cartridge quickly became popular among handgun hunters and metallic silhouette shooters because it offered flatter trajectory and greater energy than many traditional revolver cartridges. Common bullet weights generally ranged from 110 to 150 grains, giving shooters flexibility for target shooting, varmints, and medium-game hunting applications. Accurate handgun load data for the .30 Herrett typically emphasizes powders capable of producing efficient burn characteristics within shorter barrels. Powders in the Accurate Arms lineup became popular among Contender shooters because they offered consistent ignition, stable pressures, and strong velocities while maintaining good case fill. Since the cartridge relies heavily on proper shoulder positioning for headspacing in many chambers, careful brass preparation and proper die adjustment remain important for reliable chambering and long case life. The .30 Herrett remains highly regarded among specialty handgun enthusiasts decades after its introduction. Its combination of efficient case design, excellent accuracy, and strong hunting performance helped establish it as one of the defining cartridges of the early handgun hunting movement. Even with the development of newer specialty handgun cartridges, the .30 Herrett continues to hold a respected place among experienced Contender shooters and dedicated handloaders. |
