Cartridge History

.30 Herrett (Hodgdon Pistol Data)

The .30 Herrett was developed during the early 1970s by Steve Herrett and Bob Milek specifically for the Thompson/Center Contender pistol platform. Based on the .30-30 Winchester case shortened and reshaped for greater efficiency, the cartridge quickly became one of the most respected specialty handgun cartridges ever created. Its design focused on maximizing velocity and accuracy in short barrels while reducing wasted powder and excessive muzzle blast commonly associated with firing rifle cartridges from handguns.

Unlike the standard .30-30 Winchester, which was intended for rifle-length barrels, the .30 Herrett was carefully optimized for handgun hunting and metallic silhouette shooting. By shortening the case and improving powder efficiency, the cartridge delivered excellent ballistic performance from barrels commonly ranging between 10 and 14 inches. Shooters appreciated its relatively flat trajectory, manageable recoil, and strong performance on medium-sized game animals.

Hodgdon pistol data for the .30 Herrett typically emphasizes powders capable of producing efficient combustion and stable pressures within short handgun barrels. Powders such as H110, IMR-4227, and similar medium-burning propellants became especially popular choices because they provided reliable ignition and strong velocity while maintaining good efficiency in the Contender platform. Since the cartridge often headspaces on the shoulder in Contender chambers, careful case forming and die adjustment remain important for reliable chambering and long brass life.

Even decades after its introduction, the .30 Herrett continues to hold a respected place among specialty handgun enthusiasts and dedicated handloaders. Its efficient design, excellent accuracy, and versatility helped establish it as one of the defining cartridges of the early handgun hunting movement, and it remains a favorite among shooters who appreciate classic Contender wildcats.
