300 Remington Ultra Magnum (Handloader Issue #360)

The 300 Remington Ultra Magnum, commonly referred to as the 300 RUM, is one of the most powerful commercially produced .30-caliber rifle cartridges ever introduced. Released by Remington in 1999, the cartridge was designed to outperform traditional magnum cartridges such as the .300 Winchester Magnum and compete directly with extreme long-range hunting cartridges like the .30-378 Weatherby Magnum. Built from a modified .404 Jeffery case, the 300 RUM uses a large, beltless design with enormous powder capacity, allowing exceptionally high velocities and tremendous downrange energy.

The cartridge was engineered primarily for long-range big-game hunting, where flat trajectory and retained energy are critical. Standard factory loads commonly push 150-grain bullets beyond 3,400 feet per second, while 180-grain projectiles often exceed 3,200 feet per second. Heavy 200-grain hunting bullets can still achieve velocities around 3,000 feet per second, giving the cartridge outstanding long-range performance against elk, moose, and other large North American game. These velocity levels place the 300 RUM among the fastest and hardest-hitting .30-caliber cartridges available.

Unlike many older magnum cartridges, the 300 RUM does not use a belted case. Instead, it headspaces on the shoulder, which many shooters believe contributes to improved feeding reliability and potential accuracy benefits. The large case capacity also allows reloaders considerable flexibility when working with heavier bullets for long-range applications. Because of its substantial powder charge, slow-burning powders such as Retumbo and Reloder 25 are frequently used in handloads for the cartridge. Experienced reloaders often praise the 300 RUM for its ability to maintain excellent velocity even with extremely heavy .30-caliber bullets.

While the cartridge delivers impressive ballistic performance, it also comes with significant drawbacks. Recoil is severe in lighter hunting rifles, muzzle blast is substantial, and barrel life tends to be shorter compared to smaller magnum cartridges due to the large powder volume and intense throat erosion. Ammunition is also more expensive and less commonly available than cartridges like the .300 Winchester Magnum. Despite these disadvantages, many hunters and long-range shooting enthusiasts continue to favor the 300 RUM because of its exceptional power and long-distance capabilities.

Today, the 300 Remington Ultra Magnum remains respected as one of the premier high-performance hunting cartridges ever developed by Remington. Its combination of speed, energy, and long-range effectiveness has secured its reputation among hunters seeking maximum .30-caliber magnum performance.
