.308 Winchester Handload (Handloader issue #360) |
![]() |
| Warning! Load Notes: All loads were tested in a Spandau RL bolt-action rifle chambered in .308 Winchester with a 20-inch barrel fitted with a Dead Air RXD30Ti suppressor. A Trijicon AccuPoint 5-20x50mm scope mounted in Leupold PRW2 rings was used throughout testing. Ambient conditions included temperatures of 60 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit, winds of 3 to 7 mph, humidity between 32 and 39 percent, an altitude of 5,000 feet, and barometric pressure ranging from 30.18 to 30.28 inHg, as measured with a Kestrel 5700. Velocities represent the average of five shots recorded using a Garmin Xero C1 Pro chronograph. Once-fired Peterson Cartridge cases and Federal Champion 210 Large Rifle primers were used throughout. All ammunition was assembled using Redding Deluxe dies in an Area 419 Turret Reloading Press, with powder charges dispensed on an RCBS MatchMaster to an accuracy of ±0.04 grain. Accuracy was established with a single five-shot group fired at 100 yards. Reduce listed maximum powder charges by 10 percent when developing starting loads and work up carefully. |

Cartridge History
.308 Winchester Handloads The .308 Winchester is one of the most successful and influential rifle cartridges ever developed. Introduced commercially by Winchester in 1952, the cartridge was based on the experimental T65 military cartridge that would later become the 7.62x51mm NATO. Designed to duplicate much of the performance of the .30-06 Springfield in a shorter, more efficient package, the .308 Winchester quickly earned a reputation for exceptional accuracy, reliability, and versatility. More than seventy years after its introduction, it remains one of the most widely used cartridges in the world for hunting, competition shooting, military service, law enforcement applications, and recreational shooting. One of the primary reasons for the cartridge's enduring popularity is its remarkable efficiency. By utilizing a shorter case than the .30-06 Springfield, the .308 Winchester is capable of delivering excellent performance while requiring less powder and fitting into compact short-action rifles. This design allows manufacturers to build lighter and more rigid rifle actions, often contributing to improved accuracy. The cartridge's efficient powder capacity also results in relatively moderate recoil compared to many cartridges offering similar hunting performance, making it accessible to a broad range of shooters. The .308 Winchester is capable of utilizing a wide range of bullet weights, typically from 110 to 200 grains or more. Lightweight bullets provide excellent performance for varmints and predators, while bullets in the 150- to 180-grain range have become standard choices for hunting deer, black bear, elk, and similar game. Match shooters have long favored the cartridge because of its outstanding accuracy potential and ability to perform consistently at extended distances. For decades, it dominated precision rifle competitions and military sniper programs before newer cartridge designs began to emerge. Handloaders have always appreciated the .308 Winchester because of its flexibility and forgiving nature. Few rifle cartridges offer such a broad selection of available bullets, powders, and brass. The cartridge performs exceptionally well with a variety of propellants, allowing reloaders to tailor ammunition for hunting, target shooting, competition, or general-purpose use. Whether assembling economical practice ammunition or precision match loads, handloaders can often achieve excellent results with relatively little effort. Its widespread popularity also ensures that components remain readily available from virtually every major manufacturer. The cartridge's military heritage further contributed to its success. Following adoption of the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge, rifles such as the M14, FN FAL, HK G3, and numerous machine guns helped establish the platform worldwide. Civilian shooters benefited from the resulting availability of rifles, ammunition, brass, and load data. As a result, the .308 Winchester became a standard against which many later sporting and target cartridges would be measured. Today, the .308 Winchester remains one of the most respected cartridges ever created. It offers a rare combination of accuracy, manageable recoil, proven hunting effectiveness, and outstanding handloading versatility. Whether chambered in a lightweight hunting rifle, a precision target rifle, or a classic sporting arm, the .308 Winchester continues to demonstrate why it has remained a favorite among shooters for generations. |
