Cartridge History
.357 Magnum

Introduced in 1935 through a partnership between Smith & Wesson and Winchester, the .357 Magnum became the world's first commercially successful magnum handgun cartridge. Developed by lengthening the .38 Special case and increasing operating pressure, it offered a dramatic improvement in velocity, energy, and penetration over its predecessor. The cartridge was largely inspired by the work of Elmer Keith, Phil Sharpe, and Douglas B. Wesson, who pushed the limits of high-performance revolver ammunition during the early twentieth century. Chambered initially in the Smith & Wesson Registered Magnum, the new cartridge quickly earned a reputation for exceptional accuracy, flat trajectory, and impressive terminal performance, making it popular with law enforcement officers, hunters, and sportsmen alike.

Throughout its long history, the .357 Magnum has proven to be one of the most versatile handgun cartridges ever developed. Revolvers chambered for the cartridge can also safely fire the lower-pressure .38 Special, allowing shooters to use economical target ammunition for practice while retaining the option of full-power magnum loads for defense or hunting. Bullet weights commonly range from 110 to 180 grains, giving handloaders and shooters tremendous flexibility. The cartridge has also found widespread success in lever-action and semi-automatic carbines, where the longer barrel increases velocity and extends its practical hunting range for deer-sized game.

Handloaders have long appreciated the .357 Magnum because of its broad selection of powders, primers, and .357-inch bullets. Fast-burning powders produce accurate, low-recoil target ammunition, while slower magnum powders maximize velocity with heavier bullets intended for hunting or field use. Strong modern revolvers provide excellent case life when loads remain within established pressure limits, and the cartridge's straightforward design makes it one of the easiest revolver cartridges to reload. Decades of published load data and abundant component availability have only strengthened its popularity among experienced handloaders.

Nearly ninety years after its introduction, the .357 Magnum remains one of the most respected revolver cartridges in existence. Although countless newer handgun cartridges have entered the market, few have matched its balance of power, accuracy, versatility, and reliability. Whether carried for personal protection, used in competition, or taken afield in a revolver or carbine, the .357 Magnum continues to represent one of the enduring standards of American handgun cartridge design.
