Load Notes: All loads were tested in a Colt Grizzly chambered in .357 Magnum with a 4½-inch barrel featuring a 1:14-inch twist. Powder charges were weighed on an electronic scale with a tolerance of ±0.1 grain. New Starline cases and Winchester Small Pistol Magnum primers were used throughout. Velocities were recorded at a distance of six feet from the muzzle. Reduce listed powder charges by 10 percent when developing starting loads. Accuracy was established by firing a single five-shot group for each load.

Cartridge History
.357 Magnum

Introduced in 1935 through a collaboration between Smith & Wesson and Winchester, the .357 Magnum became the first commercially successful magnum handgun cartridge and forever changed the landscape of revolver performance. Developed by lengthening the .38 Special case and dramatically increasing operating pressure, it delivered unprecedented velocity, energy, and penetration for a factory revolver cartridge. The cartridge was heavily influenced by the work of experimenters such as Elmer Keith and Phil Sharpe, who demonstrated the potential of high-pressure .38 Special loads. Chambered initially in the Smith & Wesson Registered Magnum, the .357 Magnum quickly earned a reputation for exceptional accuracy, flat trajectory, and dependable stopping power, becoming a favorite among law enforcement officers, hunters, and sportsmen.

One of the .357 Magnum's greatest strengths is its remarkable versatility. Revolvers chambered for the cartridge can also safely fire the lower-pressure .38 Special, making them equally suitable for target shooting, personal defense, and hunting. Modern bullet designs ranging from lightweight jacketed hollow points to heavy hard-cast lead bullets allow shooters to tailor performance for a wide variety of applications. In addition to revolvers, the cartridge has proven highly effective in lever-action and semi-automatic carbines, where longer barrels increase velocity and extend practical hunting range. This flexibility has helped keep the .357 Magnum relevant despite the introduction of numerous newer handgun cartridges.

Handloaders have embraced the .357 Magnum for decades because of its broad selection of components and exceptional loading flexibility. Powders ranging from fast-burning target propellants to slower magnum powders allow everything from soft-recoiling practice ammunition to powerful hunting loads. Strong modern revolvers and carbines maximize the cartridge's performance while providing excellent case life when loaded within established pressure limits. The extensive variety of .357-inch bullets available today further enhances its adaptability, making it one of the most versatile handgun cartridges for both recreational and serious shooters.

More than ninety years after its introduction, the .357 Magnum remains one of the most respected revolver cartridges ever developed. Its combination of manageable recoil, excellent accuracy, proven terminal performance, and extraordinary versatility has ensured its continued popularity among shooters worldwide. Whether carried for personal protection, used in competition, or taken afield for hunting, the .357 Magnum continues to represent one of the finest examples of balanced handgun cartridge design.
