| Warning! An American Western Arms The Longhorn Model 1873 Single Action Revolver with a 4 3/4-inch barrel (1:15 twist) and iron sights was used for all handgun testing. Starline brass, CCI No. 500 small pistol primers, RCBS 3-Die Carbide Set and an Area 419 ZERO Reloading Press were used to assemble all loads. Velocity was established with a Garmin Xero C1 Pro Doppler unit. Accuracy was established with a single. |

Cartridge History
.357 Magnum Load Data (Revolver Loads) (Load Development) The .357 Magnum is one of the most successful and influential revolver cartridges ever introduced. Developed during the 1930s by Smith & Wesson in cooperation with firearm innovators such as Elmer Keith and Douglas B. Wesson, the cartridge was designed to provide significantly greater velocity and penetration than the older .38 Special. Officially introduced in 1935, the .357 Magnum quickly earned a reputation for outstanding power, accuracy, and versatility, becoming popular among law enforcement officers, hunters, competitive shooters, and civilian firearm owners alike. The cartridge uses a lengthened .38 Special case to safely contain higher operating pressures while preventing accidental chambering in weaker firearms. Standard bullet diameters measure .357 inches, with common bullet weights ranging from 110 to 180 grains. Depending on barrel length and powder selection, velocities can range from approximately 1,100 feet per second with heavy bullets to over 1,700 feet per second with lighter high-performance loads. This flexibility allows the cartridge to serve a wide variety of purposes, from personal defense to hunting medium-sized game. Load development for .357 Magnum revolver ammunition often focuses on balancing velocity, recoil, pressure, and accuracy. Powders such as H-110, Winchester 296, Accurate No. 9, Alliant 2400, and Hodgdon Lil’Gun are especially popular for full-power magnum loads due to their ability to generate high velocity and consistent pressures. Medium-burning powders such as Unique and Universal are also commonly used for lighter practice and defensive ammunition that produces reduced recoil and muzzle blast. Many revolver shooters favor 125-grain jacketed hollow points because of their historically strong stopping performance in defensive applications. Heavier 158- and 180-grain bullets are often selected for hunting and deep-penetration use, particularly when loaded with hard-cast lead or jacketed soft-point projectiles. Barrel length also plays an important role in load performance, as longer revolver barrels allow slower-burning powders to achieve higher velocities and more complete powder burn. More than eighty years after its introduction, the .357 Magnum remains one of the most respected revolver cartridges in the world. Its combination of manageable size, strong ballistic performance, and exceptional versatility has allowed it to remain relevant across multiple generations of shooters. Whether used for personal defense, recreational shooting, or hunting applications, the .357 Magnum continues to stand as one of the greatest handgun cartridges ever developed. |
