Load Notes: All loads were tested in a Henry Repeating Arms Big Boy Classic Steel with a 20-inch barrel featuring a 1:18-inch twist. The rifle was equipped with a Skinner Sights peep sight and a fiber-optic front bead. New Remington cases, CCI No. 300 Large Pistol primers, an RCBS 3-Die Carbide Set, and an Area 419 ZERO Reloading Press were used throughout load development. Velocities were recorded using a Garmin Xero C1 Pro Doppler chronograph. All listed powder charges should be reduced by 10 percent when developing starting loads in other firearms. Accuracy was established by firing a single three-shot group for each load.

.41 Magnum Hunting Lever-Action Loads

The .41 Remington Magnum is widely recognized as one of the finest revolver hunting cartridges ever developed, but it is equally impressive when chambered in a lever-action rifle. Introduced in 1964 through a joint effort between Remington and Smith & Wesson, the cartridge was intended to fill the performance gap between the .357 Magnum and the .44 Magnum. While it found a dedicated following among handgun hunters, shooters quickly discovered that the cartridge delivered even greater potential when fired from the longer barrels commonly found on lever-action rifles. The combination of increased velocity, excellent accuracy, and manageable recoil made the .41 Magnum a highly effective hunting cartridge for medium-sized game.

Lever-action rifles chambered for the .41 Magnum began appearing shortly after the cartridge's introduction. Marlin, Henry, Rossi, and several other manufacturers eventually offered rifles chambered for the cartridge, providing hunters with a lightweight and fast-handling platform. The longer barrels of these rifles allow powder charges to burn more completely than in revolvers, often producing velocity increases of several hundred feet per second. This additional speed translates into flatter trajectories, improved energy retention, and enhanced terminal performance, making the cartridge more capable in the field than many shooters realize.

For hunting applications, the .41 Magnum performs exceptionally well on deer, feral hogs, black bear, and similar-sized game. Traditional bullet weights range from 170 to 220 grains, with the classic 210-grain projectile remaining one of the most popular choices. When fired from a lever-action rifle, these bullets often achieve velocities significantly higher than those obtained from handguns, providing deep penetration and reliable expansion. Modern controlled-expansion bullets have further improved the cartridge's effectiveness, allowing hunters to take full advantage of its excellent sectional density and ballistic performance.

One of the greatest advantages of the .41 Magnum in a lever-action platform is its balance of power and recoil. While the cartridge generates enough energy for serious hunting use, recoil remains noticeably lighter than many larger rifle cartridges and even milder than comparable .44 Magnum rifle loads. This combination allows shooters to practice extensively, maintain rapid follow-up shot capability, and enjoy a comfortable shooting experience without sacrificing practical field performance.

Handloaders have long appreciated the .41 Magnum because it offers considerable flexibility. Powders such as H110, Winchester 296, Accurate No. 9, IMR 4227, and Alliant 2400 have proven particularly effective in lever-action rifles. The cartridge can be loaded with lightweight bullets for recreational shooting and predator control, or with heavier hunting bullets designed for maximum penetration and energy transfer. Careful load development often reveals excellent accuracy potential, with many rifles capable of producing impressive groups at practical hunting distances.

Today, the .41 Magnum remains somewhat uncommon compared to the .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum, but its reputation among knowledgeable hunters continues to grow. In a lever-action rifle, it provides an outstanding blend of power, efficiency, accuracy, and shootability. For hunters seeking a traditional woods cartridge that offers excellent field performance without excessive recoil, the .41 Magnum remains one of the most underrated and effective hunting rounds available.
