Cartridge History

.470 Capstick

The .470 Capstick is one of the best-known modern big-bore dangerous-game cartridges developed during the late twentieth century. Introduced in 1990 by Col. Arthur B. Alphin of A-Square, it was named in honor of renowned hunter and writer Peter Hathaway Capstick. The cartridge was designed to deliver heavy .475-inch bullets at velocities that noticeably exceeded those of the classic .470 Nitro Express, while still fitting within a practical bolt-action rifle platform. By using the belted .375 Holland & Holland Magnum case as its foundation, Alphin created a cartridge that offered enormous striking power, deep penetration and dependable feeding in strong magazine rifles intended for buffalo, elephant and other heavy game.

Dimensionally, the .470 Capstick is essentially a greatly expanded and straightened .375 H&H case necked to accept .475-inch bullets. That parent case gave the design an immediate advantage, as the .375 H&H had already earned a worldwide reputation for reliable function in harsh hunting conditions. The resulting .470 Capstick provided hunters with a cartridge that combined the authority of a true stopping round with the familiarity and capacity of a belted magnum action. In most factory-style loadings, it drives a 500-grain bullet at roughly 2,350 to 2,400 feet per second, producing energy levels well beyond those of many traditional safari cartridges. This made it especially appealing to hunters who wanted the frontal area and bullet weight associated with the great Nitro Express rounds, but in a repeating rifle rather than a double gun.

Because of its intended purpose, the .470 Capstick has always been closely associated with premium bullets built for maximum penetration and controlled expansion. Solid bullets are well suited for the largest and toughest animals, while softpoints can be used when expansion is desired on buffalo-sized game. Recoil, however, is substantial, and rifles chambered for the .470 Capstick are generally built with weight, stock design and recoil control in mind. It is not a casual sporting cartridge, nor was it ever meant to be. Instead, it belongs to a class of rifles designed for hunters who may need immediate and decisive performance at close range under dangerous conditions.

Although never as common as the .375 H&H, .416 Rigby or .458 Winchester Magnum, the .470 Capstick developed a loyal following among hunters and rifle enthusiasts who appreciated its combination of power, accuracy and mechanical simplicity. It represents a distinctly modern American approach to the classic African dangerous-game rifle: take a proven case, increase bullet diameter and usable power, and package it in a dependable bolt-action format. For that reason, the .470 Capstick remains an important cartridge in the history of modern safari rounds, admired for being bold, effective and purpose-built for the heaviest game on earth.
