.470 Nitro Express / .470 NE (Cartridges of the World)

.470 Nitro Express / .470 NE (Cartridges of the World)
Warning! Notes: In 1989, Federal Cartridge Co. added this caliber to its Premium product line, making it the first British Nitro Express caliber offered by a major American manufacturer. The 470 is generally too powerful for most North American game, but works well on medium to large game worldwide. Many 470 shooters reload the cartridge because of the high cost of factory ammo. Federal's factory loads can provide cases, and Barnes offers bullets. (Cartridges of the World 10th Edition)
Cartridge History

.470 Nitro Express / .470 N.E. (Cartridges of the World)

The .470 Nitro Express is one of the most established and widely respected dangerous-game cartridges, introduced in 1907 by Joseph Lang during the peak of British double rifle development. It was created as a response to restrictions on .450-caliber cartridges within British colonies, offering nearly identical performance while remaining compliant with regulations. As detailed in Cartridges of the World, the .470 Nitro Express quickly became one of the most popular large-bore cartridges for use on dangerous game, earning a reputation for reliability and effectiveness that has endured for more than a century.

The cartridge is based on a rimmed case derived from the .500 Nitro Express, necked down to accept a .474-inch bullet. This design was specifically intended for break-action rifles, where dependable extraction and rapid follow-up shots are essential. Standard loadings typically feature a 500-grain bullet at approximately 2,100 to 2,150 feet per second, producing over 5,000 foot-pounds of energy. These ballistics reflect a proven formula emphasizing heavy bullet weight and moderate velocity, which together provide deep penetration and consistent performance without excessive pressure.

Cartridges of the World highlights the .470 Nitro Express as a benchmark cartridge for dangerous-game hunting, particularly for species such as Cape buffalo and elephant. Its effectiveness is largely dependent on proper bullet selection, with solid bullets used for maximum penetration and softpoint or controlled-expansion designs used when greater tissue damage is desired. The cartridge’s moderate velocity contributes to reliable bullet behavior, ensuring straight-line penetration through dense muscle and bone while minimizing excessive deformation.

Although recoil is considerable, the .470 Nitro Express is often regarded as one of the more manageable cartridges within the large Nitro Express class. This balance of power and controllability has contributed to its widespread adoption among professional hunters. Rifles chambered for the cartridge are typically double rifles that are carefully regulated to ensure both barrels deliver consistent accuracy, making them well suited for close-range encounters where immediate follow-up shots may be required.

Despite the introduction of modern magnum cartridges designed for bolt-action rifles, the .470 Nitro Express continues to hold a prominent place in dangerous-game hunting. As described in Cartridges of the World, it remains a standard by which other cartridges are measured, valued for its proven performance, historical significance and dependable operation in the field.
