Cartridge History

.470 Nitro Express / .470 N.E. (Speer Reloading Manual #14)

The .470 Nitro Express is one of the most enduring and widely trusted dangerous-game cartridges, introduced in 1907 by Joseph Lang during the height of British double rifle development. It was created as a replacement for the .450 Nitro Express following colonial restrictions, offering similar performance while remaining legally acceptable across British territories. Over time, the .470 Nitro Express became one of the most widely adopted cartridges among professional hunters, valued for its reliability, balanced performance and proven effectiveness on large and dangerous game.

The cartridge utilizes a rimmed case derived from the .500 Nitro Express, necked down to accept a .474-inch bullet. This configuration was specifically designed for break-action rifles, where reliable extraction and immediate follow-up shots are critical. Data presented in Speer Reloading Manual No. 14 follows traditional loading specifications, typically featuring a 500-grain bullet at velocities near 2,100 to 2,150 feet per second. These performance levels generate energy exceeding 5,000 foot-pounds while maintaining pressure limits suitable for both modern and vintage double rifles, preserving safe and consistent operation.

Speer highlights the importance of proper component selection and consistent internal ballistics when loading the .470 Nitro Express, particularly due to its use in regulated double rifles. The cartridge is intended for use on dangerous game such as elephant and Cape buffalo, where deep penetration and immediate stopping capability are essential. Bullet construction plays a key role in achieving this performance, with solid bullets preferred for maximum penetration and controlled-expansion designs used when increased tissue damage is desired.

Recoil is significant, as expected from a cartridge of this class, but it is generally regarded as manageable compared to larger Nitro Express cartridges. Rifles chambered in .470 Nitro Express are typically double rifles built with careful attention to weight, stock geometry and regulation to ensure proper handling and accuracy. The cartridge’s moderate velocity contributes to reliable and predictable bullet performance, allowing for deep, straight-line penetration through dense muscle and bone.

The .470 Nitro Express continues to hold a prominent place in dangerous-game hunting despite the development of modern high-velocity cartridges for bolt-action rifles. As reflected in Speer Reloading Manual No. 14, it remains a cartridge defined by reliability, balance and proven field performance, maintaining its status as one of the most respected large-bore cartridges ever developed.
