.470 Nitro Express / .470 NE

.470 Nitro Express / .470 NE
Warning! Notes: The test rifle was an SSK Industries custom TCR 87 with 23 3/4-inch barrel and 1-in-14-inch rifling twist. Federal cases and Federal 215 primers were used in all loads. The diameters of the Barnes bullets were .4750-inch (softnose) and .4731-inch (Super Solid). Average ambient temperature during velocity readings was 72 degrees Fahrenheit. All loads were extremely mild in the test rifle, but the powder charges shown may generate excessive chamber pressures in other rifles.

Cartridge History

.470 Nitro Express / .470 N.E. (Handloader Issue #147 – September 1990)

The .470 Nitro Express is one of the most widely recognized and historically significant dangerous-game cartridges ever developed. Introduced in 1907 by Joseph Lang, it was designed as a direct response to restrictions placed on .450-caliber cartridges within British colonial territories. As detailed in Handloader Issue No. 147 (September 1990), the .470 Nitro Express quickly became one of the most successful alternatives, offering equivalent performance with a slightly larger bullet diameter while maintaining dependable function in double rifles.

The cartridge is based on a rimmed case derived from the .500 Nitro Express, necked down to accept a .474-inch bullet. This configuration was specifically intended for use in break-action rifles, where reliable extraction and rapid follow-up shots are critical in dangerous-game hunting situations. Standard performance has remained consistent for over a century, typically featuring a 500-grain bullet at approximately 2,100 to 2,150 feet per second, producing in excess of 5,000 foot-pounds of energy. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0} These ballistics closely mirror the proven formula established by earlier Nitro Express cartridges, emphasizing penetration, reliability and controlled performance rather than extreme velocity.

Handloader’s coverage highlights the cartridge’s continued relevance in modern rifles, including custom and single-shot platforms such as those produced by SSK Industries. The .470 Nitro Express delivers substantial stopping power at close range, making it highly effective for large and dangerous game such as elephant and Cape buffalo. Its moderate velocity, combined with heavy bullet weight, allows for deep, straight-line penetration through dense muscle and bone, which is essential in high-risk hunting scenarios.

Bullet construction remains a critical factor in the cartridge’s performance. Solid bullets are preferred when maximum penetration is required, particularly for elephant, while softpoint or controlled-expansion bullets provide greater tissue damage for use on buffalo and similar game. Despite its considerable recoil, the .470 Nitro Express is often regarded as one of the more manageable cartridges within the large Nitro Express class, contributing to its long-standing popularity among professional hunters.

The enduring success of the .470 Nitro Express lies in its balance of power, reliability and practical performance. As demonstrated in Handloader Issue No. 147 (September 1990), it continues to be a benchmark cartridge for dangerous-game hunting, representing the peak of classic British cartridge design while remaining relevant in modern applications.
