The .475 A & M Magnum is a powerful wildcat cartridge developed during the mid-twentieth century by noted gunsmith and ballistic experimenter P.O. Ackley. As part of Ackley’s broader work in developing high-performance cartridges, the .475 A & M Magnum was designed to deliver extreme power and deep penetration for use on the largest and most dangerous game animals. It reflects Ackley’s philosophy of maximizing performance through improved case design and increased powder capacity while maintaining functional reliability in suitable rifle actions.

The cartridge is generally based on a modified belted magnum case, often derived from the .375 Holland & Holland Magnum or similar parent cases, expanded and necked to accept .475-inch bullets. Ackley’s approach typically involved reducing body taper and sharpening the shoulder angle to increase case capacity and efficiency. This design allowed the .475 A & M Magnum to achieve significantly higher velocities than many traditional large-bore cartridges, particularly when loaded with heavy bullets.
