Cartridge History

.475 Linebaugh

The .475 Linebaugh is a modern large-bore revolver cartridge developed by gunsmith John Linebaugh in the late 1980s. It was designed to provide substantially greater power than traditional handgun cartridges while maintaining practical pressures for use in custom five-shot revolvers. The cartridge reflects Linebaugh’s philosophy of achieving maximum performance through large bullet diameter and moderate velocity, rather than relying solely on high pressure or excessive speed.

The .475 Linebaugh is based on a shortened and modified .45-70 Government case, trimmed and reworked to function in revolver cylinders. It is designed to fire .475-inch bullets, significantly increasing frontal area compared to standard .44-caliber handgun cartridges. Typical load data includes bullet weights ranging from approximately 400 to over 500 grains, with velocities generally between 1,200 and 1,500 feet per second depending on the load and barrel length. These ballistics provide substantial energy and deep penetration, placing the cartridge among the most powerful practical revolver rounds ever developed.

The cartridge was intended for use on large and potentially dangerous game, particularly in situations where a powerful sidearm is desirable. The combination of heavy bullet weight, large diameter and moderate velocity allows for deep, straight-line penetration through dense tissue and bone. Bullet selection plays a critical role, with hard-cast lead bullets commonly used for maximum penetration and controlled-expansion bullets available for increased tissue disruption.

Recoil is significant, reflecting the cartridge’s performance, and requires experienced handling to use effectively. Revolvers chambered in .475 Linebaugh are typically custom-built with strong frames and carefully designed grips to manage recoil and ensure durability. Despite its power, the cartridge operates at relatively moderate pressures compared to many magnum handgun cartridges, contributing to its reputation for efficiency and reliability.

The .475 Linebaugh has earned a strong following among handgun hunters and enthusiasts of large-bore revolvers. It represents a modern approach to handgun cartridge design, emphasizing bullet diameter, penetration and practical performance. As a result, it remains one of the most respected and effective revolver cartridges for hunting large game.
