Cartridge History

.50 Action Express / .50 AE

The .50 Action Express, commonly shortened to .50 AE, is one of the most recognizable handgun cartridges in the world. Developed in 1988 by Evan Whildin of Action Arms, the cartridge was designed to deliver extremely high power from a semi-automatic pistol platform. The .50 AE became widely known through its association with the Desert Eagle pistol, which remains the cartridge’s most famous firearm chambering.

The cartridge uses a rebated rim design, meaning the rim diameter is smaller than the case body. This allows firearms originally designed around smaller bolt faces, such as the .44 Magnum Desert Eagle, to be adapted for .50 AE use with relatively minor modifications. The cartridge fires a .500-inch diameter bullet and is capable of producing substantial muzzle energy compared to traditional semi-automatic handgun cartridges.

Most factory .50 AE loads use bullets weighing between 300 and 350 grains. Typical velocities range from approximately 1,300 to 1,500 feet per second depending on barrel length and ammunition type. These loads generate tremendous recoil, loud muzzle blast, and significant stopping power. Because of its size and performance, the cartridge is often used for handgun hunting, metallic silhouette shooting, and recreational shooting among enthusiasts who enjoy powerful firearms.

The Desert Eagle played a major role in popularizing the .50 AE worldwide. Manufactured by Magnum Research and later produced in partnership with Israel Military Industries, the pistol became heavily featured in films, video games, and action media throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Its large frame, distinctive appearance, and immense power helped establish it as one of the most iconic handguns ever produced. As a result, many shooters recognize the .50 AE specifically as the “Desert Eagle cartridge.”

Although the .50 AE offers impressive performance, it is not commonly used for self-defense due to the firearm’s large size, heavy weight, limited magazine capacity, and substantial recoil. Ammunition is also expensive compared to more common handgun cartridges. However, among firearm enthusiasts, the .50 Action Express remains highly respected for its engineering, power, and cultural impact within both the shooting industry and popular media.
