.50 BMG (Barnes Reloading Manual #4) The .50 Browning Machine Gun cartridge, more commonly known as the .50 BMG, is one of the most powerful and recognizable military cartridges ever developed. Designed during the final years of World War I by John Moses Browning for use in the Browning M2 heavy machine gun, the cartridge was created to provide long-range performance against personnel, vehicles, aircraft, and lightly armored targets. Officially adopted by the United States military in the early 1920s, the .50 BMG has remained in continuous service for more than a century and is still widely used around the world today. The cartridge uses a large bottlenecked case measuring 99mm in length and fires .510-inch diameter bullets. Standard military projectiles commonly weigh between 647 and 750 grains, although sporting and match bullets are available in a much wider range of designs and weights. Depending on the load and barrel length, velocities generally range from approximately 2,700 to over 3,000 feet per second. The cartridge is capable of producing tremendous muzzle energy and maintaining effective performance at distances exceeding one mile. Barnes Reloading Manual #4 includes extensive data for the .50 BMG using modern Barnes bullets designed for long-range precision shooting and extreme penetration. Popular powders for .50 BMG handloads include H-50BMG, US 869, Retumbo, and WC-860 due to their slow burn rates and ability to safely manage the cartridge’s enormous powder capacity. Many reloaders use match-grade solid and monolithic bullets for long-range competition, while others prefer expanding hunting bullets for specialized big-game applications. The .50 BMG became increasingly popular among civilian long-range shooters during the late twentieth century as surplus rifles and components became more widely available. Precision bolt-action rifles chambered for the cartridge are now commonly used in extreme long-range competitions where shooters engage steel targets at distances well beyond 1,000 yards. The cartridge’s excellent ballistic coefficient, retained energy, and wind resistance make it highly effective in these environments. Despite its impressive performance, the .50 BMG also comes with considerable drawbacks. Rifles chambered for the cartridge are typically very large and heavy, recoil is substantial even with advanced muzzle brakes, and ammunition costs are significantly higher than most rifle cartridges. However, among long-range shooters and firearm enthusiasts, the .50 BMG remains one of the most respected and iconic cartridges ever developed. Its unmatched military history, extreme range capabilities, and enormous power continue to secure its place as a legendary cartridge in both military and civilian shooting communities. |
