Cartridge History
.50 Beowulf Data The .50 Beowulf is a powerful big-bore cartridge developed by Alexander Arms during the early 2000s for use in the AR-15 platform. Designed by Bill Alexander, the cartridge was intended to provide significantly greater stopping power than standard intermediate rifle cartridges while maintaining compatibility with the familiar AR-15 design. By combining heavy .500-inch bullets with moderate operating pressures and reliable semi-automatic function, the .50 Beowulf quickly became one of the most recognizable large-caliber AR-platform cartridges ever introduced. The cartridge uses a rebated-rim case design that allows it to function with a modified AR-15 bolt while utilizing specially designed barrels and magazines. Most .50 Beowulf loads use bullets ranging from approximately 300 to 400 grains, although lighter and heavier projectiles are also available for specialized applications. Depending on bullet weight and barrel length, velocities generally range from approximately 1,600 to over 2,000 feet per second. These loads generate substantial muzzle energy and excellent close-range performance against large game and heavy targets. Handload data for the .50 Beowulf commonly includes powders such as H-110, Lil’Gun, Accurate 1680, and IMR-4227. Lighter 300-grain bullets are often capable of exceeding 1,900 feet per second, while heavier 400-grain projectiles generally operate closer to the 1,600-feet-per-second range. Many shooters favor jacketed hollow points and soft-point bullets for hunting applications, while hard-cast bullets are popular for deep penetration and heavy-impact use. One of the cartridge’s greatest advantages is its ability to transform a standard AR-15 platform into a heavy-hitting big-bore rifle while retaining semi-automatic operation and relatively compact handling characteristics. The .50 Beowulf became especially popular among hog hunters and shooters operating in thick brush environments where close-range stopping power is more important than flat long-range trajectory. The cartridge is also valued for its ability to produce substantial energy without requiring an excessively long rifle barrel. Although recoil is noticeably heavier than standard AR-15 cartridges such as the 5.56 NATO, most shooters find it manageable due to the rifle’s gas-operated system and overall weight. Ammunition and brass remain more specialized and expensive than common rifle cartridges, but the .50 Beowulf continues to maintain a loyal following among hunters, recreational shooters, and enthusiasts interested in unique AR-platform cartridges. Its combination of heavy-caliber performance, semi-automatic capability, and compact rifle handling has secured its place as one of the most successful modern big-bore sporting cartridges. |
