.50 Beowulf

.50 Beowulf
Warning! Notes: The 50 Beowulf is the brain-child of Bill Alexander of Alexander Arms and was intended to give AR-15 users more knockdown power than the Thompson and M-3 grease guns firing the 45 ACP. It certainly fulfills that requirement and in addition makes a useful rifle for large game hunters as well. Using modern bullets, like the 375 gr. Barnes X at well over 1900 fps, the 500 Beowulf surpasses the powerful 500 Linebaugh and S&W pistols, the "big fifty" (50-90) Sharps and the 50-110 Winchester buffalo rifle in energies and virtually duplicates the original English 500 BP nitro.
Cartridge History

.50 Beowulf

The .50 Beowulf is a large-caliber rifle cartridge developed in the early 2000s by Alexander Arms for use in the AR-15 platform. Designed by Bill Alexander, the cartridge was intended to provide significantly greater stopping power than standard intermediate cartridges such as the 5.56 NATO while still functioning reliably in a lightweight semi-automatic rifle. The result was a powerful big-bore cartridge capable of delivering heavy bullets and substantial energy at short to moderate ranges.

The cartridge uses a rebated-rim case based loosely on the .50 Action Express concept, allowing it to function with a standard AR-15 bolt face while requiring only a dedicated barrel and magazine modifications. The .50 Beowulf fires .500-inch bullets and is most commonly loaded with projectiles weighing between 300 and 400 grains. Depending on bullet weight and barrel length, velocities typically range from approximately 1,700 to over 2,000 feet per second.

One of the primary advantages of the .50 Beowulf is its ability to deliver tremendous close-range energy from a familiar and compact rifle platform. The cartridge was originally marketed for tactical applications, vehicle checkpoint penetration, and hunting large game such as hogs, black bear, and deer in heavy brush environments. Heavy bullets create substantial impact force, while the cartridge’s relatively moderate velocity helps maintain effective energy transfer at practical hunting distances.

The .50 Beowulf became especially popular among firearm enthusiasts because it transformed the standard AR-15 into a true big-bore rifle without requiring a completely different firearm platform. Most rifles chambered for the cartridge retain standard AR-15 lower receivers while using specialized uppers and magazines. Although magazine capacity is reduced compared to smaller cartridges, the rifle still benefits from semi-automatic operation and relatively quick follow-up shots.

Recoil from the .50 Beowulf is significant but generally manageable due to the weight and gas-operated design of the AR-15 platform. Ammunition is more expensive and less common than traditional rifle cartridges, and effective range is limited compared to high-velocity .30-caliber rifles. However, the cartridge remains highly respected among shooters who value heavy-caliber performance, compact rifle handling, and the novelty of a .50-caliber AR-platform rifle. Today, the .50 Beowulf continues to maintain a strong following among hunters, recreational shooters, and big-bore firearm enthusiasts.
