Cartridge History
5.56 NATO / 5.56 mm NATO (.223 Remington) Semiauto The 5.56 × 45 mm NATO cartridge — commonly just called “5.56 NATO” — is the standard intermediate rifle cartridge used by NATO forces and many allied militaries around the world. Derived directly from the civilian .223 Remington cartridge developed in the early 1960s, the NATO version was standardized in 1980 under STANAG 4172, built to support select-fire, semiautomatic and automatic service rifles such as the M16 family. Although the 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington share nearly identical external dimensions, there are key distinctions in chamber design and pressure specifications. The military 5.56 chamber has a longer leade (distance before rifling engages the bullet), which allows it to operate at higher pressures and with slightly more tolerances than the SAAMI-spec .223 Remington chamber. Rifles marked only for .223 Remington are typically not considered safe for firing full-power 5.56 NATO ammunition because of these differences, whereas 5.56-chambered rifles can generally handle both types of ammunition. The Handloader Issue #139 – May 1989 featured a detailed look at 5.56 NATO handloads tailored for semiautomatic platforms, emphasizing safe and accurate development for civilian shooters and competition use. One published load table from that issue includes 69-grain Sierra MatchKing bullets paired with a variety of powders such as Hodgdon H-4198, Alliant RL-7, Hodgdon H-322, and Hodgdon H-4895 — producing velocities in the approximate range of 2,724–2,837 feet per second in a standard rifle configuration. The article highlights grouping performance and the importance of loading for a “Government chamber only” test, underlining the nuance between military vs. SAAMI chambers when developing reliable semi-automatic loads. In the civilian semiauto context, 5.56 NATO has become extremely popular for sporting use due to its modest recoil, flat trajectory, and versatility with a wide range of bullet weights. Common bullet weights for semiautomatic applications range from lightweight 55 gr varmint bullets to heavier 62 gr, 69 gr, and even 77 gr match projectiles. Heavier bullets especially have found favor in precision rifle and competition circles, as well as in designated marksman roles, where extended effective range and retained energy downrange are prized. Reloaders working 5.56 NATO handloads for semiauto rifles must pay careful attention to overall length, powder choice, primer selection, and consistency to ensure reliable feeding and ignition — especially in gas-operated platforms like AR-15 variants. Powders with stable burning characteristics and appropriate charge weights help minimize fouling while maintaining consistent pressures that keep cyclic rates and extraction smooth. Many competitive and precision shooters also prioritize small standard deviations (SD) and extreme spreads (ES) in velocity for improved accuracy and repeatable shot placement. Overall, the 5.56 NATO cartridge has shaped decades of military doctrine and civilian shooting alike. Its adoption in semiautomatic firearms expanded its popularity beyond the battlefield into sporting, hunting (where legal), and competitive arenas. The Handloader Issue #139 article remains a valuable archival reference for those exploring nuanced handload development for this enduring and ubiquitous cartridge. |
