5.56 NATO / 5.56mm NATO (Handloader Issue #118) The 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge represents one of the most widely adopted intermediate rifle rounds of modern military history. Initially developed from the .223 Remington case in the late 1950s for U.S. military trials, the 5.56 NATO was formally standardized by NATO in the late 1970s. By the mid-1980s, it had become the standard service cartridge for many NATO member nations, reputed for its balance of flat trajectory, controllable recoil, and terminal performance when paired with high-velocity projectiles. In civilian circles, it quickly became the preferred chambering for AR-15 rifles and similar semi-automatic platforms, combining accuracy and versatility with ready availability of components.
