6mm ARC

The 6mm ARC (Advanced Rifle Cartridge), introduced by Hornady in 2020, is a modern intermediate cartridge developed specifically for the AR-15 platform. It was designed to bridge the gap between traditional 5.56mm NATO performance and the long-range capabilities typically associated with larger calibers, offering excellent external ballistics in a compact, low-recoil package. Based on a modified 6.5 Grendel case necked down to accept 6mm bullets, the ARC brings high ballistic coefficients and energy retention to a platform constrained by magazine length and bolt thrust.

One of the primary motivations behind the 6mm ARC’s development was to provide special operations units and precision shooters with a cartridge capable of extended effective range, improved terminal performance, and sub-MOA accuracy — all without sacrificing capacity or significantly increasing recoil. The cartridge can be loaded with a range of bullet weights from 90 to 110 grains, with the 105 and 108-grain ELD Match bullets commonly used for precision applications. With appropriate loads, the 6mm ARC can maintain supersonic flight out to 1,000 yards, making it uniquely capable for both competition and tactical roles.

In terms of internal ballistics, the 6mm ARC operates at relatively modest pressures (typically around 52,000 psi), extending barrel life compared to hotter rounds like the .224 Valkyrie or 6mm Creedmoor. It is compatible with standard AR-15 lower receivers, though it requires a Grendel-type bolt and magazines optimized for its specific case shape. The ARC has also found a home in bolt-action rifles, where it can take full advantage of longer overall lengths and heavier bullets. This flexibility further expands its utility across hunting, competition, and defense contexts.

While still relatively new, the 6mm ARC has developed a strong following among reloaders and long-range enthusiasts due to its blend of efficiency, accuracy, and manageable recoil. It remains one of the most compelling options for shooters seeking a precision-focused AR-15 cartridge with legitimate reach and effectiveness beyond the limitations of 5.56mm. Its growing presence in both factory rifle offerings and match-grade ammunition ensures its continued relevance in the evolving world of modern intermediate cartridges.
