7mm PRC (Handloader Issue 358)

Introduced by Hornady in 2022, the 7mm Precision Rifle Cartridge (7mm PRC) was designed to provide a modern, standardized long-range hunting cartridge that fully utilizes today's high-ballistic-coefficient 7mm bullets. Unlike many older magnum cartridges that were adapted to modern projectiles, the 7mm PRC was engineered from the outset with long, heavy-for-caliber bullets in mind. Built on the proven .375 Ruger case family, it features a non-belted design, a 30-degree shoulder, and sufficient case capacity to propel 175- to 180-grain bullets at approximately 3,000 feet per second from a 24- to 26-inch barrel. Hornady also standardized a fast 1:8 twist rate, ensuring proper stabilization of the long, sleek bullets favored by today's hunters and long-range shooters.

The cartridge was developed to bridge the gap between the 7mm Remington Magnum and larger, more overbore cartridges such as the 28 Nosler. While it delivers performance comparable to many larger magnums, the 7mm PRC does so with excellent efficiency, moderate recoil for its class, and compatibility with standard-length magnum bolt actions. By eliminating the traditional belted case found on older magnum cartridges, Hornady also simplified case resizing and helped promote consistent headspacing for improved accuracy and brass life.

Hunters quickly embraced the 7mm PRC for its exceptional versatility. Heavy, aerodynamic bullets retain velocity and energy remarkably well while resisting wind drift, making the cartridge effective on game ranging from deer and pronghorn to elk and moose. The flat trajectory and outstanding retained energy have also made it popular among western hunters who may encounter longer shots across open country. Factory ammunition offerings from several manufacturers have expanded rapidly since the cartridge's introduction, further contributing to its growing popularity.

For handloaders, the 7mm PRC offers tremendous flexibility and outstanding performance potential. Slow-burning magnum powders typically provide the best combination of velocity, consistency, and case fill, while premium brass from manufacturers such as Hornady, Peterson, and ADG has given reloaders durable, high-quality component options. Bullet weights generally range from 160 to 180 grains, although lighter hunting bullets and heavier match bullets can also produce excellent results when matched with appropriate powders and seating depths. Careful load development allows shooters to optimize accuracy while taking full advantage of the cartridge's efficient design.

Although still relatively new, the 7mm PRC has rapidly established itself as one of the premier modern hunting cartridges. Its combination of efficient case geometry, excellent long-range ballistics, standardized fast twist rates, and compatibility with today's high-performance bullets has made it a favorite among serious hunters and precision rifle enthusiasts. As rifles, ammunition, and reloading components continue to become more widely available, the 7mm PRC appears well positioned to remain one of the leading 7mm magnum cartridges for years to come.
